Spring Program

UCSF Community of Scholars May 1st following the Helen Nahm Award Lecture

For the third year, the Alpha Eta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International co-sponsored the UCSF School of Nursing Community of Scholars (COS) on May 1st, 2009.

The COS is student-coordinated program that began years ago, as a result of the efforts of students who sat on the UCSF School of Nursing Doctoral Council. They felt a need to have opportunities available to learn the skills of Podium and Poster presentation in a supportive environment, prior to graduation. That initial concern evolved into the current annual call for students to submit abstracts of their research. A committee of doctoral students, along with participation from an Alpha Eta board member reviews the applications, scores them and invites the applicants to either present at the podium or to present posters, or both. It is an invigorating and exciting event that attended by all members of the nursing community, from the school, the medical center, and beyond.

In 2007 & 2008, the Community of Scholars program followed the morning Helen Nahm Research Award presentation. That new tradition was followed again in 2009. The Helen Nahm Research Award presentation, which was be held from 10 to 11 am, honored the career of a nursing faculty member or graduate, and was followed by a reception from 11 to 1 pm in Millberry Union.

The COS program was held from 2 to 4 pm and includes the Ninth Annual UCSF Health Policy Paper award, followed by five excellent podium presentations of Doctoral research. There were eleven poster presentations and a light reception then be held on the Nursing Mezzanine from 4 to 5 pm.
